SHE RIDES SHOTGUN Review

ree

She Rides Shotgun is a new crime thriller from director Nick Roland. It tells the story of Nate, played by Taron Egerton, a newly released convict, who reunites with his estranged 11-year-old daughter, Polly, brilliantly portrayed by newcomer Ana Sophia Heger. Throughout the film, we learn that Nate is on the run from a crime syndicate he owes, not just money, but more.

This movie turns into a father-daughter road trip, blending elements of a crime drama with hints of westerns and heist movies. The tone is dark and realistic, featuring gut-wrenching scenes, especially when Nate and Polly realize they've missed nine years of her life. They form a bond and become each other's protectors on this wild journey to escape the criminals determined to kill Nate for past transgressions.

The movie packs an emotional punch as well as action-packed sequences, including close-up combat and a climactic gun shootout that's one of the best choreographed in recent memory. I felt compelled to write this review immediately after watching because I wanted to commend Ana Sophia Heger’s performance as Polly. At just 11 years old during filming, with only one other acting credit outside of TV and commercials, she gives an unprecedented child acting performance. She seems like an old soul and handles her role with the skill of a seasoned actress.

Hager's performance is career-launching, and I expect great things from her in the future. Taron Egerton also shines as the gritty absentee father seeking redemption. This film isn't an easy watch; it carries a lot of emotional weight and leaves you feeling it too. But it's worth it.

I know this movie is based on a book, and I love it so much that I might pick up a book for the first time in about 15 years. She Rides Shotgun will open in limited release this weekend and is expected to be streaming on demand by the end of August. I highly recommend giving it a shot. As it stands now, it's one of my favorite films of 2025.
