OFFICE ROMANCE Review

Promotional poster for Office Romance

Office Romance is about, as you may have guessed, an office romance. Jackie Cruz (Jennifer Lopez) is the President and CEO of an airline, dealing with a lawsuit. Daniel Blanchflower (Brett Goldstein) is her new lawyer. Everyone can see where this is going.

Jennifer Lopez has such a natural screen presence that I always enjoy regardless of the quality of the movie. Mediocre movies that involve her are still worth watching to some extent. That was no different here as she plays a solid enough character. Brett Goldstein, in comparison, is mostly fine. His is a performance that could have been given by any actor, but he's charming enough to buy into the connection between these two.

Other than Lopez, and maybe even including her, the other standout of the film is Betty Gilpin as Sydney Bloom, Jackie's second in command that has no plans to stop working even when her baby is about to be born and is instantly skeptical of the connection she senses between Jackie and Daniel. A lot of Office Romance's funniest moments involve her, and she's at the top of her comedic game.

Jennifer Lopez and Brett Goldstein in Office Romance

The comedy in general lands more often than it doesn't. The cast is charming and likable enough to pull the important moments off. It all makes for a watchable movie.

There's just ultimately nothing to latch onto, and nothing that will stick with me. You can predict every beat of the romance plotline a mile away. The story around the lawsuits isn't even interesting enough to dig into, purely existing to show us Daniel's lawyer skills rather than to add real stakes. The boring, straight forward title is almost perfect for the type of movie this is. Enjoyment of Office Romance depends solely on if you're invested in these two characters, and the movie does enough that many people will be invested.

Office Romance didn't waste my time, but it will leave zero impact on me.
